Welcome

Dear Colleagues and Friends,
I am delighted to welcome you to “Göttingen Channels 2026” of the German Cardiac Society Working Group on Cellular Electrophysiology (AG18).
Building on the success of our previous Channels Symposia, I am especially pleased to present once again a broad and inspiring program—this time dedicated specifically to cardiac ion channels. Understanding cardiac ion channels and exploring their potential relevance for therapeutic approaches in cardiovascular diseases is an important focus within our working group and brings together a rich spectrum ranging from basic research to translational and clinical applications. In addition to an exciting line-up of scientific talks including internationally well recognized colleagues and experts in the field, we have planned a poster session to ensure that early-career and emerging scientists have a strong platform to present their work and engage in discussion with the community.
It is a particular honor for me to welcome Nobel Laureate Prof. Dr. Erwin Neher as our keynote speaker. Prof. Neher received the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for enabling the direct detection of single ion channels in cell membranes and for pioneering the patch-clamp technique for high-resolution current recordings in biological membranes. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all faculty members and speakers for contributing their time and expertise, and to our industry partners and sponsors for their generous support, which helps make this symposium possible.
Göttingen Channels 2026 held at the German Primate Center in Göttingen. This specifically selected institute unites translation and preclinical expertise, allowing us to share ideas on the urgently needed acceleration of translating basic research findings into clinical application and to conduct discussions with this idea in mind. I look forward to welcoming you in person for an inspiring meeting, lively discussions, and fruitful scientific exchange.
Sincerely,
Constanze Schmidt
